Manhattan, New York, On A Budget

If you are planning a trip to New York City, one very important fact you need to be aware of is the cost. New York City is very expensive. This should be common knowledge but is not. Pretty much everything you’d want to do would cost you some kind of money. If you are on a budget, these are some great places and things to do for a low price or even for free.

Central Park

It doesn’t cost any money at all to take a walk through Central Park or to sit down and read a good book. It might be a bit of a walk to get there if you are farther away but it is worth it. The view is incredible on both ends of the park. On one end you get a great view of the Plaza Hotel and even if you don’t feel like walking through, it can be just as relaxing to sit down and observe what is taking place around you

Ground Zero

In place of the two twin towers stands ground zero, a beautiful memorial of those who went missing or died on that infamous day in 2001. Their names are engraved into the four walls on each memorial and at night there can be seen beautiful lights to illuminate the names. On birthdays of the victims white roses are placed to honor them. Although a sad place to visit, if you wish to pay your respects to those fallen, this is a free option for you.

New York Public Library

It costs no money to visit the New York Public Library, which is a beautiful building located near Bryant Park. Granted there are many stairs leading up to each floor but they do offer elevators. You can take a look inside rooms meant for studying, the gift shop, exhibits in the halls that you can take a look at or pass by. If you want to just sit and study, catch up on work, or read a book, this is the place for you.

Bryant Park

Bryant Park, which is located by the New York Public Library, is a great place to have lunch, read a good book, talk on the phone, whatever your heart desires. It is free to sit down at one of the tables and is full to the brim with birds that come right up to your feet. Truly a beautiful little park to spend some time at, it would be worth your while to check out Bryant Park. In the winter they have pop up shops lining the outskirts known as the Winter Village and they even have an ice rink.

Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry is a free ferry ride you can take that from Manhattan to Brooklyn and New York City’s other boroughs including Staten Island and the Bronx. If you’re on a budget and don’t want to take the subway, this is a great option for quick and free travel.

Times Square

Of course the stores in Times Square at not free but to visit and stroll through is. It doesn’t cost any money to visit the stores and plenty of times each store is having a good deal and you can get items for low prices.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Even if you aren’t religious, St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a beautiful and historic Catholic church to visit and take pictures. The inside is spacious and the ceiling is wonderful and it doesn’t cost a penny to experience the church.

Visit Movie And Television Show Sites

It doesn’t cost anything to pass by the famous show sites such as CSI NY, Home Alone 2, The Avengers, etc. Being able to be in the same place as a very famous movie or show was filmed is a very cool feeling and that doesn’t cost a pretty penny.

Cheap Food In Manhattan

Fast food places are always one of the best options for cheap food if you’re in a rush and doesn’t have much on you. There is pretty much a Dunkin Donuts or McDonalds around every corner and even if one is busy, there is always another one close by you can stop by.

Getting To New York City

Rhode Island is not too far from New York and the drive is only about 3 or 4 hours. You can always take a train but that is a much more expensive option just as driving there yourself would be. Bus tickets are around $30-40 dollars while a train ticket can cost upwards of $200. A good bus company that offers free wifi, outlets, and a bathroom is the Peter Pan Bus Company and tickets are always relatively cheap.
