Sixth straight victory boosts boys’ basketball team’s Div. III mark to 9-1

LINCOLN – The Ponaganset High boys’ basketball team remained hot on the heels of unbeaten Toll Gate in the Division III-South standings last Friday night by grabbing its sixth straight win, a 75-58 victory on the road over a Lincoln team that entered the day in first place in the Division III-East.

The Chieftains, who are 9-1, suffered their loss to Toll Gate, an overtime 83-82 defeat on Jan. 3 at their home gym. Only one other team in D-III, North-leading Mount Hope, has just one defeat. Ponaganset will visit Mount Hope next Tuesday night, as well as Toll Gate in the teams’ regular-season finale on Feb. 19.

The Lions, meanwhile, had entered last week with a 7-1 mark, but suffered a 57-51 loss to RIIL newcomer Blackstone Valley Prep two nights before their battle with the Chieftains, and heading into Lincoln, the Chieftains knew they were going into hostile territory.

But the Chieftains came out strong and were rolling on both sides of the ball, and they scored 18 of the game’s first 20 points before extending their lead to 25-4.

“A lot of respect for Lincoln,” said Ponaganset assistant coach David Campbell – he filled in for head coach Roger Forand, who missed the game with an illness. “They are a really good team, so our defensive intensity to start the game was a huge key for us to jump out a little bit. We needed every bit of it.”

“And offensively, I think we shared the ball against their pressure defense, which helped us get some easy shots,” added Campbell. “That was also a big key to our game.”

Despite being shut down early by the Chieftains, the Lions were able to battle back and only trail by a 41-27 score at halftime. The Lions then pulled out their press in the second half and started to get themselves back in the game.

After the Chieftains extended their lead to 51-33, the Lions sank a few three-pointers that helped them narrow their deficit to 55-47 with 6:45 to play. But five quick points by Ponaganset quieted the comeback, as the Chieftains kept their lead in double digits.

“It was a good team win,” said Campbell, who saw him team receive a game-high 27 points from Griffin Ferretti, 12 from Michael Resnick, 10 from Steven DelSesto, and nine from Ryan Smith. “We shared the ball well. I can’t stress that enough.”

Two nights before defeating the Lions, the Chieftains hosted St. Patrick Academy and broke the 90-point mark for the third time this season in rolling to a 94-60 victory.

Five players scored over a dozen points for the winners: Kyle Cullen, who tossed in 21 points, DelSesto, who scored 18, Sean Cullen, who added 14, and Smith and Resnick, who each had 13.

The Chieftains held a 49-31 lead at halftime.

The Chieftains, who hosted Rogers on Tuesday night, will visit Davies on Thursday at 7 p.m. and host the Paul Cuffee School next Monday before their showdown against Mount Hope.
